Help me buy a new wireless router w/ adapter under $150!?

ATM I have an old wrt54g and it doesn’t cut it any more. I am a gamer and it produces a ton of lag. It also doesn’t carry a signal very far.

Let me describe my needs and maybe you guys can point me in the rite direction.

First off, I need to pick up a router and adapter for $150 or less, that’s my budget!

I live in a city and an apartment with many other routers, wireless phones, cell phones, cell towers, etc etc. So I need a good signal. It has to be able to go through 2 walls with a ton of junk in between them. the router is going to be in the west wing, and adapter is east wing. So it has to transmit a good signal thru all that mess.

These next features are not really needed but they are a bonus.

I would like to stream large video files thru the wireless network. ATM with my wrt54G its not very pleasant. Lots of lag and skipping.

I would like to be able to control the speeds at which the adapter connects to me. I do not want my kids to eat up 99% of the bandwidth with their silly DLs. So I want to limit the sleep at which they are connected to the interwebs.

Also I need a piece of technology that isnt going to harm my gaming experience to bad. I am not playing cutting edge FPS, so I dont need a great ping, but I cant deal with the current 300-3000MS my wrt54g currently give me.

Longevity would be nice, I want something that will last.

Those are pretty much my needs. I need both router and adapter for $150 or less.

I am open to any and all suggestions. I thank you all ahead of time for your answers and thoughts.

First person with a nice router gets the points!

Use the Linksys ones.. they’re always good.. also has good signal and looks cool and is small so you can fit it anywhere. Also, its only like $50.

Booked A Ryanair Trip For Self And Friend. What Do I Do Next?

Do I need to print tickets?
What commands do I give to laptop to print to new wireless printer?
Do I need to do online check in?
What information do I need for this?
Thanks.

God knows but it is bound to cost you , Ryanair will charge you for just about everything , even going to the toilet shortly, so they are hardly a low cost airline as far as i am concerned, there is cheaper and better out there .

Can I set up a new wireless network off a router that is wired from a separate wireless router?

OK here’s the deal. I live in a Duplex. We share our internet with the tenant next door. He has the main connection, and he has his own wireless network and theoretically we should be able to tap into that network. The problem is, is that his router is literally in farthest corner of his side of the house, and we do not get the best connection to his network. Somewhere between 24 mbps and 26 mbps.

ANYWAY.

We tried running a line out of the back of his wireless router, into the attic, over to our side and down into our bedroom. I have it connected to our router and I set up a network for our side. Everything seemed to go right. I can wirelessly connect to the network at a strong 54 mbps. Also, I can connect via a wire through my router (which is also through his router) and I get a strong 100 mbps. The problem is that I cannot connect to the internet through my network.

Is this because the internet signal going into my router has already gone through a router with a different wireless network and has somehow been changed and cannot b re-broadcast? I can’t think of another explaination… Does anyone know what’s going on?

Change your router’s IP address range to something totally different, like 192.168.10.1
Then, change you wireless channel to 1 or 11 instead of the default 6.
It should all work after that.
make sure your WAN port is set to use DHCP, to get an IP and the network info from his router….

New wireless N router problem…?

okay ty for clicking this topic :]

well i have a modem/wirless router thingy from AT&T. its my modem AND my router…. dont know how that works but yea. its one thing. but has both.

so this weekend i bought a wireless N router, DIR-615 from office depot, and i originally have a wireless G adapter.

well i just noticed that my download rate has DRAMATICALLY dropped. for some reason its 25-30 kb/s when i connect to both my original modem AND the wireless N router that i plugged it into. it used to be 500+ kb/s when i was connected to the modem but now its all slow. the internet loading is fine, just downloading is bad…..

so i wanna ask, is this rite? anyone know why this is happening?
ps. the router is rite next to the modem (can this be the problem? since they are both emitting wireless connections)

Take the wireless N router back and buy a Wireless Access Point that uses 802.11N.

You don’t want to have two routers on your network. That will just cause more problem and drive you crazy..

If you were using a wired connection connection previously, then that will always be faster than a wireless connection.

If you were using a wireless connection previously, then I’d say that the addition of a second router to your LAN is causing the problem that you’re seeing.

You want to use a wireless access point (WAP) instead of a wireless router. You don’t need all the additional router overhead just to do wireless-N.

Here’s an example of such a device:

Our wireless internet will not stay going, we even bought a brand new wireless router and it does same thing?

We had the Linksys older wireless router and the last few days, I could connect to it, with it RIGHT next to my laptop and signal strength would say "Poor" and my moms laptop appx 30′ away wouldnt even find it, our printer runs off it too and that wont work now either, I thought maybe the router was shot, but i guess not, we went out and bought a brand new Linksys one and its doing the SAME thing and it has "RangeMax" and it doesnt work, ive reset it, updated it, restored it, idk what else to do, please help! my mom runs her chef buisness out of her home office and she cant do anything now
Well i know its not the power, and the internets fine, if i connect an ethernet cable to the router to my laptop its great, but the wireless is haywire, i just unplugged them both for about 15 minutes and it seems to be working fine, i havent tried my moms laptop yet. i hope it stays working

Given the nature and complexity of the issue you are experiencing, I suggest you contact a Wireless Network specialist in your area.

New Wireless network trouble shooting?

I’m trying to set up my uncle’s wireless network. He has never had internet in his house before so he decided to go wireless. He got a linksys setup (router and pci card). I installed the pci card first, since he didn’t have the router hooked up it picked up his neighbors signal. I didn’t want to steal someones signal so I just skipped "selecting a network".

Next, I tried installing the router, thinking "almost done, just plug this thing in and it should be a set up wireless network" right? Well the thing is that the router instructions say that the pc need to be connected to the router via an ethernet cable!!! What’s the deal? I thought it was supposed to be wireless!

Well I didn’t get it hooked up, and he’s still waiting for me to do so.
His pc is located on the other side of the house from his router so the five-foot ethernet cable is out of the question. Does it just have to be connected to establish a network? How do I get it set up without the use of cables? Thanks!

You need to be connected once to the router to program it. Be sure to follow the Linksys instructions as they are quite particular. If there’s any doubt go to control panel>add remove programs and then uninstall all things Linksys and then start it all over again. you will HAVE to attach it to a router at least once.

Is there a way to mark Verizon wireless voicemails as new once skipped?

When listening to new messages if I skip one, the next time I check voicemail, they are announced as "skipped" messages. Is there a way to have them announce as "new" again?

After you listen to your voicemail it should say press a number to listen to other options, try that.

My friend got a new wireless router and changed her password. How do I update the new password to my computer?

Right now there is a red x next to her named connection, which means I am not able to access her internet connection.

If it is a private network you’ll need to ask her for the "key". if you near her new wireless router then it will show up on your windows connect to… page. Windows will ask you for the "key" so you can connect. These securities are there to stop people accessing private connections.
